A 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Lawrence Henry Gipson Institute
October 20-21, 2023

The Lawrence Henry Gipson Institute for Eighteenth Century Studies invites scholars (at all stages of their careers) to join in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Institute, and looking to the future of Eighteenth Century Studies.

In the past half century, the field of Eighteenth Century Studies has changed substantially, and scholarship is continually breaking new ground. This symposium encourages a conversation about new directions for study of the long eighteenth century. Four invited speakers from the fields of History and Literature will offer keynote addresses that consider the changes that have occurred in Eighteenth Century Studies since the days of Lawrence Henry Gipson, and offer their insights regarding the direction of the field today, particularly on needs and opportunities for further study. Concurrent meetings for graduate students in History and Literature, and a Roundtable Discussion invite participants to engage in the discussion. Registration for the event is free.

Keynote Speakers

  • Kathleen Wilson, Stony Brook University
  • Jorge CaƱizares-Esguerra, The University of Texas at Austin
  • Felicity Nussbaum, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Helena Woodard, The University of Texas at Austin
